In the 30 or more years I have spent in the company of pipe smokers, I have repeatedly been reminded of the fact that there is no universal truth about how best to smoke a pipe. I have lost count of the number of times, for example, the subject of “how best to fill your pipe” has been the topic of conversation in a group of pipe smokers. Sometimes, the debate becomes extremely lively and heated as each person tries to convince the other that his method is, of course, the best. That is a bit like saying there is only one way to make meatloaf, which naturally is not true.

When this kind of debate gets underway, participants often forget the only universal truth there is about pipe smoking – namely that there is none - pipe smoking is an individual art. Each of us has his own personal taste regarding the choice of pipe and tobacco, our own particular way of filling the pipe, lighting it and how we best enjoy the sensuous experience of pipe smoking. 

Each of us has his own reasons for smoking a pipe. For some, the pipe is a piece of art, for others it is simply a means of enjoying tobacco. Some consider filling a pipe a ritual, while others simply fill the bowl without ever stopping to think about it.

The aim of this section under Expert Knowledge is to gather as much information about pipe smoking as possible. Pipe smokers around the world can offer an infinite number of useful tips and advice about how to derive maximum enjoyment from pipe smoking and pipe tobacco. It might be a short, simple description of how to fill a pipe, a piece of advice about how to store your tobacco, how to clean your pipe or something entirely different.

It is my sincere hope that as many pipe smokers as possible will contribute so that this section becomes a knowledge bank about pipe smoking. This is where new pipe smokers should be able to seek guidance and find useful tips on how to begin smoking a pipe. The experienced pipe smoker should be able to find inspiration and useful hints that can make his pipe smoking even more enjoyable.

I will read all the submitted tips and descriptions, and in time, many of them will be posted here on the website. I intend to divide the suggestions into various categories to facilitate the search for particular topics and kinds of advice. I hope to receive lots of descriptions and advice but you are also welcome to send any questions you may have.
