Developing the idea
The idea of enriching tobacco with spirit flavouring is far from new. In fact, what we today refer to as “flavour” was discovered – almost accidentally – by sailors long ago. To keep their tobacco moist on long sea voyages, sailors would wrap it in canvas and seal it with pitch. And where better to store these packs of tobacco than in the many empty rum barrels that could always be found on board ships in those days. Even though the barrels were empty, the rum that had absorbed into the wood gave off sufficient aroma to flavour the tobacco – and so the first spirit tobacco was born. When adding spirits to tobacco, it is not so much a matter of preserving the moisture of the tobacco as it is of giving the tobacco a distinctive flavour and aroma – and the pipe smoker an experience a cut above the usual. |

The right raw materials
We at Mac Baren know everything there is to know about the best raw materials for making tobacco – and what it takes to bring out the best in each tobacco and blend it to achieve a rich, distinctive flavour.
This is evidenced by one of our very first tobaccos – Mixture – containing more than 35 different tobaccos blended in a unique combination, which today remains among our most popular blends.
And it is this expertise that has proved so beneficial in the development of the newest tobaccos in Uncle Louie's Bar Selection. |
